Newsletter: September 3, 2021, Textbook, CSL, Anime drawing, Erhu, Taiwanese conversation class and Adult learning

Happy Labor Day!

Now summer is almost over. Kids are all going back to school. Some of us are going back to the office. PCLS will start its first day in less than two weeks on September 12. Here are some positive news to share to keep an open line of communication.

Textbooks are in process of being distributed either through class parents or teachers. Be on the lookout for an email to pick up the textbook packets.

September 12 is the first day of school. All language and culture classes will be conducted virtually. Please refer to the school calendar for events and actives.

As I communicated in my last email, although we received some interests in online only option for language class instruction, most the class will only have 1 or 2 students. So virtual instruction for a specific grade is unlikely. All classes will be conducted according to school calendar.

Re-Design of CSL (Chinese as Second Language) class

Based on feedback from CSL teachers, parents and enrollment data, PCLS re-designed its CSL class naming and curriculum. Instead of having specific grades like traditional classes, CSL students will now be grouped into levels (Levels 1 through 6). Students are assigned into a level based his/her age, Chinese language proficiency and teacher recommendations from prior year. As a result, some of the students who were previously in a higher CSL grades may now be in a CSL 5 class. This CSL 5 means CSL level 5, not CSL grade 5. If you have any question regarding the CSL class curriculum and student placement, please contact Academic Director, Cindy Chen (academic@pcls.org).

New Culture class Offering – Anime Drawing Class

  • This course will teach students how to draw their favorite characters straight from beloved cartoons/anime. Students will be encouraged to throw out suggestions of subjects they’d like to illustrate, and will be instructed step-by-step on how to go from simple lines to a complete face and/or figure. This class is most appropriate for children ages 8+.
  • The ultimate goal of this course is to improve and enhance students’ drawing abilities, giving them the confidence to encapsulate their favorite characters in any pose on paper— and in color if they so choose.
  • Every week, kids will be able to bring home a completed piece of artwork. More complicated pieces will be broken into 2-3 weeks.

We will also offer Erhu class as we found a talented Erhu teacher from Taiwan.

Any parents who want to change their child(ren)’s culture class selection to Anime Drawing or Erhu, please contact Culture Director, Veronica Chen (culture@pcls.org).
